Know the Facts

“Nuclear energy comes from uranium, a nonrenewable resource that must be mined. “

While few new jobs are created from nuclear mining each year, over one thousand jobs in the U.S. are dedicated to it currently (a quantity larger than the undergraduate student body at Hollins University) .

However, although the mines are considered a worthy temporary alternative to coal mines, which allegedly contribute heavily to global warming,  they can be quite costly. Health risks, funding to meet federal regulations and the widening expenses to build and abandon mines top the list of budgetary concerns for nuclear energy.

Also fueling the debate on nuclear energy are statistics stating that nuclear energy plants are simultaneously responsible for 3/4ths of the United States clean air and 2,000 metric tons of radioactive waste per year.

A member of the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona discusses the stuggles her village has with uranium mining in the film “Don’t Mine Me”. Click the link below to watch a clip.
